PC virus prevention

They say that prevention is better than cure, and that’s certainly the case when it comes to viruses and malware infecting your PC or laptop. We’ve already covered how to get rid of a PC virus or malware, but here’s how you can avoid them in the first place.

As the World Wide Web becomes more and more a part of our daily lives, the cyber-criminals who create these programmes are creating them to be ever more sneaky. At the least invasive end of the scale, a virus can send annoying e-mails to your friends and colleagues – but at their worst, they can wipe your personal data or allow other people access to it.

There are several steps that you can take to keep your computer safe.

The first and most important step is to install reputable anti-virus software. Good quality products such as Avast and AVG are available to download for free as open-source programmes online, or for an extra level of security, you can purchase software from one of the leading brands. Whether you choose a freebie or an established brand, it’s important to have anti-virus software of some kind on your machine – and to ensure that it is regularly updated.

Are you browsing safely? The most likely way for your computer to become infected with a virus is through something you’ve clicked – so be careful. If you spy a banner advert that looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Chances are that you aren’t in line for a £20,000 prize just for clicking it, you’re possibly in line for a nasty computer virus.
